The Annual Goombay Party Celebrating Grove’s Bahamian Heritage

The Rotary Club of Coconut Grove lit up the night with its annual Goombay Party, a vibrant fundraising event honoring the community’s deep Bahamian roots. Held in collaboration with the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, the evening was filled with island rhythms, flavorful Bahamian cuisine, delicious fresh conch, tropical cocktails, and a lively silent auction of art and gift certificates from local businesses — all in support of a heartfelt cause.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Coconut Grove Crisis Food Pantry, a vital local organization providing food security to families in need. One of the most touching moments of the evening came from local artist Alan Laird, who attended the event with his wife Donna. Alan gave a heartfelt talk about his mission to bring art to individuals with disabilities — a cause close to his heart. Deeply moved by the pantry’s impact on the community, Alan generously donated an original painting to the silent auction, making a significant contribution to the fundraiser.

“It was a fun event for a great cause,” shared a Rotary Club member, capturing the energy of the evening. The Club is grounded in the belief that “We do good in the world with people that we love.”

The Goombay Party was more than just a legacy of the Bahamian-rooted community in Coconut Grove — it was a beautiful expression of community, culture, and compassion coming together to make a difference.
