Stanley Cup Magic: Fookem’s Pie Becomes Panthers’ Good Luck Charm

Puck, Pie, and Glory: Fookem’s Fabulous Fuels Panthers’ Stanley Cup Celebration

Last night, the Florida Panthers clinched their second Stanley Cup title—and while the team’s grit on the ice deserves full credit, fans from the Grove say there was a little extra magic behind the win: the legendary Key Lime Pie.

The story starts back in September 2024, when Joshua Abril, founder of Fookem’s Fabulous, received an unexpected call from Panthers’ goaltending coach Robb Tallas. “I really want to eat a Key Lime Pie out of the Stanley Cup,” Tallas told him.

Tallas had come across Abril’s inspiring journey—how he started baking pies after losing his job as a TV producer during the pandemic—and wanted to honor South Florida’s culture by bringing a bit of Coconut Grove into the Panthers’ championship dreams.

Fast forward to the Panthers’ thrilling Stanley Cup victory, and history was made. At a post-win celebration hosted at Tallas’ home in Parkland, surrounded by family and friends, a full-sized Fookem’s Fabulous Key Lime Pie was served right out of the Stanley Cup itself.

“It was a very humbling experience to say the least,” said Abril. “Flattering is the understatement of the year.”

The iconic pie, known for its sea salt graham cracker crust and bold Coconut Grove spirit, became the first Key Lime Pie ever eaten out of the Stanley Cup—a sweet, citrusy symbol of South Florida pride and perseverance.

Meanwhile, back in Coconut Grove, celebrations went late into the night. Sandbar was packed, the streets were buzzing, and locals raised a glass (and maybe a fork) to the homegrown hero and his now-legendary pie.

So next time you’re in Coconut Grove, swing by Fookem’s Fabulous at 3606 Grand Avenue. Shake Joshua’s hand, give him a high five—or better yet, thank him by grabbing a slice of the pie that helped bring home the Cup.
